Crohns disease is an inflammation of the gut which can lead to diarrhoea, pain in the abdomen and tiredness. Many cases are very mild but medication is sometimes needed if the pain is severe and in extreme cases an operation to remove part of the intestine is sometimes needed. When our immune systems in our intestines reacts abnormally to bacteria in the stomach, crohns disease is thought to be the cause. This may be an inherited reaction. The symptoms can also be likened to food poisoning also known as gastroenteritis but they differ as they are not due to an infection and they can last for a long period of time or until the condition is treated. One high risk of crohns disease may be smoking. Crohns is not a very common disease and there have been reports of there being 1 in 1000 people that are affected with the condition.
